Matt Courtney was born in Meridian, Mississippi and moved to the Bay Area at the age of 10. While studying at UC Berkeley for his philosophy degree Matt also pursued two of his real passions: snow skiing and food and wine by working as a server at Alice Water’s Chez Panisse and skiing on the Cal Berkeley ski team. These two pursuits allowed Matt to travel the world and be further exposed to food and wine. After college, Matt worked under Master Sommelier Ken Fredrickson at Restaurant Terroir in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. On trip to France and Italy with Ken, Matt’s passion for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir was established. Inspired, he returned to California to pursue a degree in Viticulture and Enology from UC – Davis. Matt gradated in 2005 and was hired by industry icons Helen Turley and John Wetlaufer as the Assistant Winemaker at Marcassin. After nearly a decade working for Helen Turley, Matt left Marcassin for Arista Winery in the Russian River Valley. Excited at the opportunity to work with two premier estate vineyards, along with a select group of growers cultivated by the McWilliams family, Owners of Arista Winery, Matt saw a golden opportunity for his career. Since 2013 at Arista Winery, Matt has produced some of the most highly acclaimed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from California. Matt resides in St. Helena with his wife Angela and two daughters.
